Alumnae Create Endowed Scholarship at UPIKE

Sisters Judith Walters Hinkle and Anne Walters Worthington

Sisters Judith Walters Hinkle and Anne Walters Worthington established the Pikeville College Academy Endowed Scholarship to increase opportunities for students from their community.

University of Pikeville alumnae and sisters Judith Walters Hinkle and Anne Walters Worthington established the Pikeville College Academy Endowed Scholarship.

The scholarship honors Judith and Anne’s beloved classmates and continues the spirit and tradition of the Pikeville College Academy while furthering educational opportunities for undergraduate students in the mountains.

The Pikeville College Academy served as a local educational institution for Grades 1 through 12 before being formally incorporated as a four-year baccalaureate college. Judith is a 1952 graduate of the academy and a 1962 graduate of Pikeville College. Anne is a 1949 graduate of the academy and a 1951 graduate of Pikeville Junior College.

Judith and Anne believe the Christian atmosphere at the academy taught them morals and values that have stayed with them throughout their lives.

“I am so thankful I was able to attend the academy and obtain a wonderful education,” Judith says. “The lessons we learned enriched our lives.”

The sisters said the small classroom settings, which still exist at UPIKE, helped them receive a quality education and establish lifelong friendships.

The University also holds a special place in their hearts as their grandmother Elizabeth Syck Walters was part of the first graduating class in 1894, and their father, Walter P. Walters Sr., served as a member of the board of trustees.

To qualify for the Pikeville College Academy Endowed Scholarship, the recipient must be a graduate from one of the following Kentucky counties: Floyd, Johnson, Knott, Letcher, Martin or Pike; have a minimum 3.0 high school GPA; and maintain a 3.0 GPA while at UPIKE.
